Why Color Belongs in a Grade 1 Art Curriculum

Color is one of the basic elements of art, and it is one of the most exciting elements for young students to explore. Grade 1 students are already familiar with color names, but this is the stage where they can begin understanding color relationships in a more intentional way.

The color wheel helps students see how colors are connected. It shows primary colors and secondary colors in a circular arrangement so students can understand how colors relate to one another.

The primary colors are red, yellow, and blue. These colors cannot be made by mixing other colors together.

The secondary colors are orange, green, and purple. These colors are made by mixing two primary colors together. Red and yellow make orange. Yellow and blue make green. Blue and red make purple.

This lesson gives students a hands-on way to explore those ideas. Instead of only looking at a color wheel poster, students create a flower that becomes a color wheel. Wax crayons or oil pastels are useful for drawing strong lines and details, while tempera paint allows students to mix colors and create rich painted petals. Thicker paper helps the artwork hold up through painting, cutting, folding, and gluing.

Condensed Color Wheel Flower Tutorial

Students begin by creating a painted background using blue, white, or purple paint on thick paper. They blend the paint in different directions so the brushstrokes create texture and movement. Once the background is full, they set it aside to dry. This background becomes the setting for the color wheel flower and gives students a chance to explore brushwork and texture.

Next, students plan and create the flower pieces. They can use the Build-a-Flower page to choose a face, eyes, mouth, and petal style, or they can use the included flower templates and cut-and-glue petal supports.
